Intent for PSHE & RSE
Through the teaching of PSHE and RSE, we ensure that children are aware of the diverse society that we live in, how to stay safe, global issues and how to foster healthy relationships both now and in the future. We provide opportunities for our children to learn about rights and responsibilities for themselves and others, British Values, the importance of mental health and challenging stereotypes within the community we live in. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by positively contributing to school life, the wider community and the world.
PSHE
At Newtown, we deliver Personal, Social, Health Education using Jigsaw, a mindful approach to PSHE. At our school we allocate time to PSHE each week to teach the PSHE knowledge and skills in a developmental and age-appropriate way. These explicit lessons are reinforced and enhanced in many ways - assemblies and collective worship, praise and reward system, Learning Charter, through relationships child to child, adult to child and adult to adult across the school.
Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. We are also working on emotional literacy and social skills development to enhance children’s emotional and mental health. We have a ‘Thought of the Week’ that is discussed in weekly assemblies and throughout class discussions. Children can then nominate their peers displaying our key values and Thought of the Week through a nomination box. Their behaviour and representation of the weekly thought is then celebrated in assembly.
The PSHE sessions at Newtown are a time for reflection and for self-expression. Our aim is for all children to feel comfortable expressing themselves in a safe and respectful space. Teachers review the learning that has taken place at the end of each unit as well as the end of each academic year, to ensure that any gaps are addressed and to confirm that all the necessary curriculum content has been covered.
We also take into consideration any matters that need to be addressed/are prevalent in school and will incorporate these topics into PSHE discussions if/when required.
